Last year’s finalists Arsenal return to the Europa League this Thursday and face a stern test, away to German side Eintracht Frankfurt.
Frankfurt were last year’s semi-finalists, losing to eventual winners Chelsea on penalties. They also finished seventh in the Bundesliga last season .
Arsenal come into this game in a lacklustre mood, having drawn 2-2 after throwing away a 2-0 lead to bottom of the league Watford. But, the Europa League gives Arsenal the opportunity to bounce back against tough opposition.
The Gunners begin their campaign in the group stages, however, Frankfurt have had three qualifying matches. Die Adler beat Flora Tallinn of Estonia, FC Vaduz of Liechtenstein and Strasbourg of France to make it to the group stage.
Frankfurt lost some key players this summer; top scorer Luka Jovic departed for Real Madrid, Ante Rebic for AC Milan and Sebastien Haller for West Ham. However, Arsenal should not let the guards down, as Frankfurt have played four games this season and won two, with both victories coming at home.
We’ve taken a look at some key battles that could decide where the game is won and lost.
Bas Dost vs Sokratis
New Frankfurt signing Dost arrived from Sporting and his experience in European tournaments will be crucial for his side. Likewise, Sokratis will have to lead the Arsenal defence and use his experience to quell the booming atmosphere which is to be expected in Frankfurt.
Dost promises to be a handful and Sokratis will have to be prepared for defensive headers all night as he poses a significant threat in the air.
Andre Silva vs David Luiz
Another new singing for Frankfurt, Silva has been touted as Portugal’s future and will be no doubt looking to impress his new club in Europe.
David Luiz will have to close Silva down whenever possible, as the 23-year-old striker has a venomous shot on him. Crucially, Luiz will have to be disciplined and not lunge in or he faces the prospect of giving away another penalty.
Filip Kostic vs Ainsley Maitland-Niles
The Serbian winger is one of the stars of last season that has stayed in Frankfurt.
With six goals and 10 assists last season, Kostic is a real instigator in the attack for his side and young Maitland-Niles will have to be alert for the whole 90 minutes.
Danny da Costa vs Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
The 26-year-old German right wing-back had a sensational season last year for Frankfurt and will no doubt be looking to carry that momentum onto this season.
Aubameyang’s prolific goal scoring record is well known, so da Costa may abandon his attacking runs in favour of more defensive actions, especially if the Gabon forward is deployed on the left.
