# Elneny reveals he spoke to Ozil before Besiktas loan – does he have an Arsenal future?

Mohamed Elneny secured a temporary move away from the Emirates over the summer by joining Turkish giants Besiktas on a season-long loan.

The 27-year-old, who joined from Swiss side Basel back in 2016, struggled to make an impact under Unai Emery, who has since preferred the younger options of Matteo Guendouzi and Joe Willock in front of the back four.

And now, talking to [Turkish outlet Milliyet, cited by Sports Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/arsenal-player-says-mesut-ozil-advised-move-summer/), Elneny has revealed that he spoke to Mesut Ozil before sealing a move to Turkey.

> Mesut is an amazing man. He is a person that I really care about. We had wonderful moments together at Arsenal. Of course, I spoke with him before my decision to come to Besiktas. Mesut knows the country very well.

> He advised me to join Besiktas. After I completed my move to the club, I called him and invited him here.

But does the Egyptian have a chance at a Gunners future?

Unfortunately for the midfielder, we don’t think he’ll ever turn out for the club again.

He made [19 appearances in total last season, featuring in 1,013 minutes of action](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mohamed-elneny/profil/spieler/160438), with over half coming in the Gunners’ cup competitions.

And with Willock and Guendouzi impressing and Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka also available to Emery, Elneny looks likely to be surplus to requirements next summer.
