# Arsenal fans respond after Kanu slams club’s decision to sell Iwobi

Alex Iwobi ended his 15-year association with the Gunners late in the summer by joining Everton in a deal which could total up to £40 million.

The Nigerian was one of a number of departures over the summer at the Emirates, however, the decision to sell the 23-year-old certainly split opinion on the red side of Noth London.

And now, former Arsenal and Nigeria striker Nwankwo Kanu has hit out at the Gunners’ decision to sell Iwobi.

Talking to [Goal](https://www.goal.com/en/news/i-couldnt-believe-we-did-it-arsenal-wrong-to-sell-iwobi-says/xc58zkx3msq01ack2fntyq8l4), Kanu said:

> I would say they made a mistake, 100 per cent. Why they let him go, I don’t know.

> He’s a boy who, in and out, is Arsenal. He always wanted to do his best for the club. He loves the club, but not only that he can play football.

> What he brings week in, week out, the fans need to appreciate that.

> I think he is still young and those are the type of people you want in the team, people who grew up here, who knows everything about the club and wants to die for the club.

> He was one of them, so for us to lose him and to let him go, was a shock. I couldn’t really believe we did it, but that’s football.

And these Arsenal fans were quick to respond to the former striker’s comments on social media, with some hitting out at the 43-year-old’s opinion.

> Twitter: @charles\_watts Just glossy sentimentalism. Iwobi had hit a brick wall. His game was not going to improve any furthe… https://t.co/OtwQYJEmeF (@Billy7Rwoth)

> Twitter: @charles\_watts He was never good enough for us, squad player at very best. I wish the bloke all the best of luck though. (@Brad\_Potter04)

> Twitter: @charles\_watts Obviously his opinion is bias due to his nationality I would say. Iwobi had plenty of game time over… https://t.co/0TIY4T6cMa (@JacktheGreek\_)

The decision to cash in on Iwobi, on the whole, has been a call that has divided Arsenal supporters.

The 23-year-old has impressed in his first month with Everton, scoring against both Lincoln City and Wolves.

The Gunners received a healthy fee for a player who struggled to take his game to the next level in the final third. However, if Iwobi can now improve on his goalscoring and goal providing figures on Merseyside, Arsenal could look back on the sale as a mistake, but for now, they won’t be too worried about his departure.
