Meunier refuses to rule out January exit – the perfect signing for Arsenal?

Arsenal and Manchester United have previously been linked with a move for Paris Saint-Germain star Thomas Meunier.

The versatile Belgian is currently in the final year of his contract with the Ligue 1 champions, and his recent comments have fuelled speculation of a potential January exit.

Talking to French outlet RTBF, cited by the Daily Mail, about his situation over the summer, Meunier revealed there was plenty of interest in his services.

It was an intense period, with a lot of interest and discussion.

I could have left but it was not done because there was nothing that suited the club or myself. Nothing was 100 per cent for it to work.

The 27-year-old then went on to admit that he is happy in Paris, however, the athletic defender then dropped a hint at a potential move away after falling out of favour under Thomas Tuchel.

I have always said that I wanted to stay in Paris. I still have one year on my contract and I still hope an extension can be secured.

The situation is a little more complicated because I am no longer the preferred choice in my position, but I remain professional.

I feel good there and we will see what happens during the season.

Should Arsenal reignite their interest in the experienced defender in January?

With Thilo Kehrer and Colin Dagba both being preferred to Meunier in the early stages of the campaign, a move away from the Parc Des Princes could be a realistic option for the player.

Arsenal should definitely be keeping a close eye on Meunier’s situation, and a new year swoop for the Belgian could be just what the Gunners need.

Meunier can play at right-back or in a holding midfield role, two areas that Unai Emery would more than likely be keen on strengthening halfway through the current campaign.

The Belgium international has plenty of elite-level experience and has been regarded as one of Europe’s best utility men in recent years, so it seems a surprise that he has fallen down the pecking order in France.

He could also be available in a cut-price deal, especially if Meunier doesn’t sign a new deal before January, leaving him with just six months left on his contract.

If he becomes available, Emery should certainly make a move for the energetic defender, and his arrival could prove to be a shrewd addition to the Gunners’ exciting squad for the second half of the season.
