Arsenal fans blame Mustafi and Xhaka after learning collective penalty stat

Granit Xhaka’s rash challenge on Heung-Min Son in the north London derby last weekend resulted in a familiar sight to Arsenal fans, an opposition penalty.

Harry Kane coolly converted from the spot to give Spurs a 2-0 advantage at the Emirates, with many still fuming with the Swiss star for his unnecessary tackle.

Strikes from Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang did earn Unai Emery’s side a point in the end, and it has since been revealed by Sky, as cited by @AFTV Media, that no team has conceded more Premier League penalties since August 2017 than Arsenal.

And these Gunners fans were quick to blame Granit Xhaka and Shkodran Mustafi on social media after learning of the surprising stat.

@Kal_kass: “All thanks to Mustafi and Xhaka.”

@Willrich01380: “Mustafi and Xhaka at fault for most of them I bet!”

@AC12603425: “No team has both Mustafi and Xhaka in their team.”

@eugochess: “Xhaka and Mustafi.”

@santistalondon: “Terrible players maybe??!!”

@odinaks: “Xhaka and Mustafi”

@harshtagA9: “And they were mostly conceded by Mustafi and Xhaka.”

@ItsDrHassW: “Mustafi and Xhaka. Bin.”

Of course, Mustafi and Xhaka haven’t been at fault for every penalty conceded since 2017, but it seems as if plenty of Arsenal fans feel like that number will only increase with the duo in the side.

Mustafi probably won’t feature in Unai Emery’s side for the foreseeable future unless the Gunners suffer a major injury crisis at the back.

Sokratis, David Luiz, Callum Chambers and Rob Holding all seem to be preferred to the German, while Xhaka may now face a tough task getting back into the side following his poor performance against Spurs.

It’ll definitely be an interesting prospect to keep an eye on, and Arsenal fans seemingly think that without the out of favour duo in the side, they shouldn’t give away as many penalties.
