Arsenal fans hit out at Xhaka after he defends NLD performance

It’s safe to say that Granit Xhaka didn’t have the best of games against Tottenham last weekend.

The 26-year-old retained his place in the starting line up following the defeat to Liverpool and gave away a penalty in the first half after a rash challenge on Heung-Mon Son.

In total, Xhaka gave away seven fouls during the 90 minutes and was finally cautioned late on.

Many Arsenal supporters and pundits have since hit out at the defensive midfielder for his consistent individual errors.

Xhaka has now hit back at his critics. The midfielder, talking to Sky, cited by social media page @afcstuff, owned up to his mistake before heaping praise on his side’s performance against Spurs.

Of course, critics are always here. The North London Derby, I think we had a good game. I made a mistake with the penalty but if you saw the game, we could have won.

We had a lot of chances but this is football. Nobody speaks about the chances, nobody speaks about how many we missed. They always speak about the mistakes. This is part of football.

And these Arsenal fans were quick to hit back at the Swiss star following his comments.

@INVINCEARSENAL: We would have won if you didn’t give away that stupid penalty.

@AkkaGo: Granit doesn’t understand this wasn’t some fluke thing he did. This happens way too often.

@dijaycoke: Nonsense.

@EduAlex1999: Exactly. If you and only you didn’t “make a mistake with the penalty” we could’ve won.

@dazzybeat: Guy is slow, always late, unable to dribble past anyone. The ultimate definition of a liability.

@RealestFendi: Mistake after mistake, the same individual errors for 3 years.

‘They always speak about the mistakes’ is a key phrase in Xhaka’s comments. Of course, fans are going to talk about the errors, as without his individual mistake, the Gunners would probably have come away with all three points against their bitter rivals.

It may have been better if Xhaka stayed quiet for the international break, as it appears his latest comments have angered plenty of Arsenal fans.

It’ll be interesting to see whether or not Unai Emery will stick with Xhaka against Watford following the domestic break, and dropping him for the upcoming fixtures for a more attacking approach could be a sensible decision with the Gunners’ faithful.
