# Schalke ended Kolasinac interest due to financial reasons – would he have been a big miss?

Unai Emery strengthened his left-back options this summer with the arrival of Kieran Tierney from Celtic.

The Gunners then allowed Nacho Monreal to return to Spain shortly before the European window slammed shut, with the 33-year-old ending his six-year association with Arsenal by completing a permanent move to Real Sociedad.

However, things could have been different for the Gunners this summer, with Bundesliga side Schalke showing an interest in Sead Kolasinac.

According to [German outlet SportBild, cited by Inside Futbol](https://www.insidefutbol.com/2019/09/04/bundesliga-giants-mulled-then-opted-against-signing-arsenal-star/436379/), Schalke were extremely keen on bringing the Bosnian back to the club but ended their interest in the 26-year-old due to financial reasons.

Kolasinac has now taken over from Monreal in the starting left-back role but is expected to make way for Tierney when the Scot is fully fit.

But would he have been a big miss if he left the Emirates?

We don’t think Kolasinac would’ve been a big loss.

The attacking left-back has shown defensive frailties during his two-year stint in London, and it could have been better for the club to have received a bigger fee for Kolasinac and kept Monreal at the club for the next 12 months.

Monreal had six years of Premier League experience before his departure, something which would’ve been crucial in helping Tierney settle into life in England.

Kolasinac will more than likely now serve as a back up to Tierney, and if he struggles to gain regular game time for the remainder of the campaign, he may well search for an Emirates exit next summer, which could result in Schalke reigniting their interest.
