# “We have a gem!” – Arsenal fans relieved after Greek sides end Mavropanos interest

Konstantinos Mavropanos hasn’t had the best 18 months.

After joining Arsenal from PAS Giannina last January, the 21-year-old has suffered multiple injuries, which has resulted in the defender making just seven first-team appearances.

The Greek centre-back has recently suffered a recurrence of a groin problem and now looks set to be sidelined until October.

However, the unfortunate injury could actually prove to be a blessing in disguise.

According to the [Mirror](https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/arsenal-star-set-emirates-stay-18973899), the player’s recent injury has put AEK Athens and Panathinaikos off attempting to bring the player back to his native country before the end of the month.

And these Arsenal fans were quick to reply to the news, with many heaping praise on the defender.

> Twitter: Genuinely believe Mavropanos has all the qualities to break into your first team. He’s just been very unlucky with injuries. We have a gem. (@WanIwobi)

### Read Arsenal verdict

Mavropanos certainly has the potential to succeed at the Emirates, however, as mentioned, his fitness is a serious concern.

It may have been good for him to head out on loan this season, but the recent injury has made that highly unlikely.

If he can shake off the groin problem and remain fit for the remainder of the campaign, he may well have a chance of featuring on a regular basis in the Gunners’ cup competitions, with Shkodran Mustafi seemingly heading for an Arsenal exit.

We’ll have to wait and see, but Mavropanos’ recent injury could prove to be a blessing in disguise, especially if he can showcase his promising ability to Unai Emery when he returns.
