Arsenal player ratings: Newcastle United (A)

Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Newcastle United away at St. James’ Park.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the only goal of the game that was dominated by the away team in terms of having more of the ball, but were equal in attempts on goal.

In a first half where both teams had good chances, it was Newcastle who came the closest to score through Joelinton. But the new signing couldn’t direct both of his attempts on target.

Jonjo Shelvey went close but Bernd Leno was there to make the save before Aubameyang was found by Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the box in the 58th minute.

Last season’s joint Golden Boot winner then had the audacity to chip the ball over Martin Dubravka into the back of the net.

The home side tried to come back and equalise, but it was not to be.
