Arsenal’s Rugani approach rejected – but that’s not a negative thing

Arsenal have reportedly seen a two-year loan offer for Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani turned down, but there’s a key reason why that’s not all bad news for Gunners fans.

According to Goal, Unai Emery is working hard to revamp his defence before Thursday’s transfer deadline, with a centre-back and left-back the priorities ahead of a key 2019-20 season.

Kieran Tierney has been pursued all summer, with Celtic already rejecting two advances, and with Shkodran Mustafi nearing a move away, it seems a central player is also being targeted.

Rugani may not be coming to the Emirates this summer, but the fact that Arsenal are actively on the lookout for a new centre-back is extremely promising.

The £72million capture of Nicolas Pepe has rightly been received very well, but it would’ve been worrying if the club were willing to spend that money on the attack – arguably the team’s strongest suit – rather than the defence.

If the Gunners can bring in a centre-back and get the Tierney deal over the line while they can, there are plenty of reasons for supporters to be both excited and optimistic ahead of the new campaign.
