Gordon talks up Tierney move – are the Gunners getting a bargain?

Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon has hinted that Arsenal’s potential £25 million deal for Kieran Tierney is a ‘big price’ – but are the Gunners actually getting a bargain?

The 22-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates all summer, with Arsenal confident of securing a £25 million deal before the window shuts next Thursday.

The Gunners will reportedly offer the majority of the fee upfront after failing in their second bid for the Scot in recent weeks.

And talking to the media, cited by the Daily Express, Gordon admitted a potential £25 million deal for Tierney is actually a big price tag.

For a Scottish player, it is a big price tag but then you look at some of the other players going for bigger fees. I don’t think anyone can put these price tags on the players’ shoulders.

It’s nothing to do with them. A £25m player could have been £5m a few years ago.

Gordon then went on to talk up Tierney’s qualities, admitting the youngster has everything needed in a modern-day full-back.

We almost have to put that to one side and concentrate on the ability of the player. Kieran has everything you’d want in a modern full-back.

Whoever manages to get him playing for them this season is lucky because he’s going to be a massive player for us or anybody else.

Despite Gordon’s comments, are the Gunners actually getting a bargain in a proposed deal for the left-back?

In today’s market, a £25 million move for the dynamic defender looks a smart piece of business, especially considering Manchester United paid Crystal Palace £50 million for Aaron Wan-Bissaka earlier in the window.

Tierney has been plying his trade in the Scottish Premiership over the past four years, a level significantly lower in quality compared to the Premier League, but looks to have all the qualities needed to succeed in England.

The 22-year-old has been a standout performer for the Hoops, impressing with his defensive and attacking qualities on a regular basis.

Tierney is quick, intelligent and versatile, and would be able to play in either a back four or back five under Unai Emery.

Even though the player is yet to prove himself in a top European league, a £25 million move would certainly be seen as a great deal by the Gunners, and even though it may take the Scot some time to settle in the Premier League, he has plenty of years ahead of him before reaching his prime.
