Arsenal linked with shock move for Alderweireld – is it a no-brainer?

Toby Alderweireld would be an ideal signing for Arsenal, should a controversial move come to fruition.

According to the Express, the Gunners are “considering” approaching the Belgian this summer.

He is available for just £25 million due to a clause in his contract changing and Tottenham could be willing let him leave.

Alderweireld has been linked with a Spurs exit in previous summers, and now 30, they may cash in on the centre-back.

He still has plenty to offer, however, and while Spurs may ultimately not allow him to join Arsenal, making a bid can do no harm whatsoever.

The Belgium international would be a great addition to a Gunners defence in need of a dominant figure.

Alderweireld has been considered one of Europe’s premier defenders over the past three or four years, playing a key role in Spurs’ rise under Mauricio Pochettino.

He still arguably has a few years left in his prime and he would clearly improve Arsenal.

The only downside is Alderweireld’s recent injury record, which hasn’t been too reliable, while £25 million would eat into a fair chunk of the Gunners’ reported £45 million budget.

The positives outweigh the negatives, however, and Arsenal should aim to ‘do a Sol Campbell’ and take Alderweireld from their most bitter rivals.
