Arsenal have reportedly approached rivals Manchester United over the possibility of signing defender Eric Bailly – but would the Ivory Coast international be a smart signing by the Gunners?

According to journalist Duncan Castles, cited by the Daily Star, Unai Emery is keen on a move for the 25-year-old, however, Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has informed the defender he wants to keep him at Old Trafford ahead of the new season.

Arsenal are looking to bolster their defensive options ahead of the new campaign, and a move for Bailly appears to be a smart one.

Bailly, who signed for United in a £30m move from Villarreal in 2016, has been one of the best performers at the back in recent years under numerous Manchester United managers.

The Ivorian, who has three years of Premier League experience, has plenty of pace and has impressed with his positional awareness in a shaky United defence.

However, the Red Devils would more than likely demand a large fee for the player, and with the Gunners having just £45m to spend this summer, a move could well be out of Arsenal’s price range.

Emery may well be better off looking at alternative options across Europe, with the Spaniard also keen on adding to his midfield options ahead of the new campaign.
