# Torreira asks to leave Arsenal – can the Gunners afford to lose him?

Uruguayan midfielder Lucas Torreira has reportedly asked to leave Arsenal this summer, but can the Gunners really afford to lose him?

[According to Sport Italia’s Alfredo Pedulla, as cited on Calcio Mercato](https://www.calciomercato.com/news/boom-milan-torreira-chiede-la-cessione-vuole-i-rossoneri-67243), the midfielder has informed Arsenal of his desire to return to Italy, with Milan among the teams interested in signing him.

This is a deal that Arsenal must ensure does not go through this summer. While he endured a mixed first season at the club, Torreira was widely considered as the defensive midfield asset that they have longed for.

The 23-year-old made 34 appearances in the Premier League last season, 24 of those being starts. That number will only increase next season as he continues to adapt to the demands of the English game and the club will be hoping the best is yet to come from Torreira.

The Uruguay international is a player that Emery should be wanting to build his team around, not sell at the first hurdle.

Unless the money is simply too good to turn down, the Gunners must do all they can to keep Torreira at the club this summer as he could be a pivotal part of the team for years to come.

If they sell, Emery and Arsenal will find themselves back to square one right away.
