Mesut Ozil has told Sky Sports that he is happy at Arsenal and intends to stay at the club, but is it worthwhile for the Gunners to keep him around?
The German has often been linked with a move away from the Emirates in recent times, with his form unpredictable and his relationship with Unai Emery sometimes questionable.
Despite speculation surrounding his future, though, the 30-year-old says he intends to see out his contract at the very least:
Absolutely. I’ve got two more years on my contract. I don’t know after that but I’ve got two years left.
I’m 30 now, still got years in front of me, it’s down to the club as well of course, but I’ve got two years here – after that I don’t know what happens.
Fans are likely to be split on Ozil’s comments, with the German becoming an increasingly divisive player as the years have ticked by.
On his day, there is no doubting the German’s quality and ability to create magic, with few players in the Premier League possessing such vision.
However, there are days when he can appear disinterested and ineffective, and his attitude can sum up Arsenal’s reputation for being a soft touch.
There is an argument to say that Emery should rebuild his team without Ozil, creating a new side that doesn’t have players from the past involved.
Then again, the Germany international still has plenty to offer if he is willing to knuckle down and perform consistently.
Next season needs to be one where Ozil excels, or Arsenal should decide to cash in on him.
