Arsenal’s top-four hopes has been significantly dented as they were humbled 3-1 by Wolves at the Molineux.
Ruben Neves, Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota were the scorers for the home side, while Sokratis pulled one back for the visitors late on.
Around the 28th minute, Wolves won a free-kick 25 yards out. Neves stepped up and stroked his effort with pace and precision to give his team the lead.
Nine minutes later, the home side worked a small corner routine and Jonny found Doherty free in the box. The latter just had to put his head to the ball to double the lead for his team.
An Arsenal error freed up Jota to run at their defence at the stroke of half-time and eventually get his shot away. It was actually quite a savable effort but Bernd Leno made a hash of it. Surprisingly, the scoreline read 3-0 to Wolves at half-time.
The Gunners pulled one back later on when Sokratis headed in from Granit Xhaka’s corner. However, it was not enough for them to even get a point.
Here’s how we rated their players today:
Bernd Leno - 4
Should have done better to save the third goal. He was a bit palpable for the second as well. A bad day in the office for the goalkeeper.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles - 4
The youngster has been superb off later but today was not his night. He failed to control simple balls that allowed Wolves to counter with effect in wide areas.
Laurent Koscielny - 5
The captain tried his best to keep his team solid at the back, but they were too error-prone today. He was booked for a bodycheck on Jota
Sokratis - 5
He really struggled to deal with the pace of Wolves on the counter. Scored a consolation goal later on.
Nacho Monreal - 5
The Spaniard was better than many wearing the Arsenal jersey tonight. He was booked for cynically fouling Jonny
Lucas Torreira - 4
The Uruguay international really failed to get a grip of the game. He was subbed off in the second half.
Granit Xhaka - 3
The Switzerland international also failed to impose his game in midfield. Gave the ball away in the build-up of the third Wolves goal. Assisted the consolation goal at the end. He was booked for dissent after Koscielny fouled Jota.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan - 4
The right winger struggled to offer anything going forward. He was deservedly subbed off in the second half.
Mesut Ozil - 4
People say Mesut Ozil doesn’t perform away from home. Well, that got reiterated tonight. The former Germany international once again went missing in an away game.
Alex Iwobi - 5
He looked the liveliest of the forwards on the pitch. However, Arsenal failed to get him the ball more often than not. Subbed off with 20 minutes to go.
Alexandre Lacazette - 5
The Frenchman worked hard for the team, but that wasn’t enough as he wasn’t getting much of the ball to have attempts on goal.
(SUB) Matteo Guendouzi - 4
Came on in the second half to bring some stability to the midfield. The youngster tried his best but not all went his way.
(SUB) Sead Kolasinac - 4
He came on and Arsenal’s shape changed. But the fate of the game didn’t even twitch.
(SUB) Eddie Nketiah - 4
The youngster came on for the final 20 minutes but there was very little he could do to turn this game around.
