Arsenal suffered a setback in their hopes of Europa League glory as they lost 3-1 to Rennes in the first leg of their round of 16 fixture.

The Gunners headed into this game as the strong favourites and took an early lead courtesy of Alex Iwobi.

However, in the 41st minute, Arsenal went down to 10 men. Sokratis Papastathopoulos received his second yellow card after a foul on Ismaila Sarr, only moments after he impeded Hatem Ben Arfa.

Benjamin Bourigeaud stepped up to take the free-kick and, after his initial effort was blocked, fired home a sweet strike to level things before half-time.

The visitors were up against it in the absence of Sokratis in the second half and Rennes made them pay for the Greek defender’s indiscipline.

Nacho Monreal diverted the ball beyond Petr Cech and into his own net after failing to deal with a cross into the box.

Rennes compounded Arsenal’s misery in the 88th minute, as a counter-attack was sweetly finished by Senegal international Sarr’s thumping header.
