The FA Cup fourth round kicked off with a huge clash at the Emirates Stadium tonight between old rivals Arsenal & Manchester United.
United went through to the final 16 after three clinical strikes from Alexis Sanchez, Jesse Lingard & Anthony Martial gave them a hard-fought 3-1 victory over the Gunners.
The hosts seemed to start the better of the two sides but couldn’t seem to take advantage of the space awarded to them down the left-hand side by Ashley Young. Unfortunately for Arsenal, Sokratis was taken off injured in the 21st minute, having been one of Arsenal’s most consistent players this season.
Ten minutes after that it all seemed to start to fall apart for Arsenal as Alexis Sanchez took the ball around Petr Cech and finished into a gaping net to make it 1-0, after a great pass by Romelu Lukaku.
Two minutes after that it was Lukaku again turning provider as United broke away and Lukaku played a low ball into Lingard who finished at the near post, beating Cech all ends up.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled one back just before half-time, after some great work from Aaron Ramsey, ensuring Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team talk at the break wasn’t as comfortable as he would have liked.
Not too much action in the 2nd half followed, with only Ramsey coming close with a close range header that was well saved by Sergio Romero, as Arsenal tried to apply some pressure to United.
The game was put to bed in the 82nd minute as Paul Pogba’s long ranged shot was pushed into the path of Martial who made no mistake in hitting the back of the net.
Here are how we rated the Arsenal players in this latest encounter.
Petr Cech - 3
Three goals conceded from four shots on target is not good enough. Also, the shot that he saved was pushed straight into Martial’s path.
Sead Kolašinać - 5
Tried to get forward and as a result was caught out for United’s second goal.
Laurent Koscienly - 5
Coming off the back of a great performance against Chelsea, he was disappointing. Sokratis coming off didn’t help matters.
Sokratis - 6
Was playing well until he had to be taken off through injury.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles - 5
Was lively down the right hand side. Final pass was lacking.
Lucas Torreira - 6
Same battling attitude as he has had all season. Just didn’t click for him tonight.
Granit Xhaka - 5
I don’t feel he brings much to the team, where Mattéo Guendouzi could have been the better option.
Alex Iwobi - 6
Looked very lively at the beginning of the game but seemed to die out as the game went on.
Aaron Ramsey - 7
Arsenal’s best player, his movement in between the lines was fantastic. Great play for the goal and was unlucky not to have his name on the score sheet.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - 6
Didn’t show much when he got on the ball, but as always was trying to make runs into space and got a goal for his efforts.
Lacazette - 6
Was tracking back and coming deep to try and make the play happen. Got an assist and nearly on the score sheet.
