Arsenal preparing offer for Gelson Martins

Atletico Madrid’s Gelson Martins is a transfer target for Arsenal, according to the Mirror, via the Daily Star.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery revealed at the start of the month that he would only be looking to make loan signings due to financial restrictions at the club, and Emery is reportedly in a battle with Gunners legend Thierry Henry for Martins.

Monaco, whom Henry currently manages, is said to be Martins’ preferred destination however, as the former Arsenal man looks to add to his squad in their battle against relegation in Ligue 1.

The Portuguese forward joined Atletico last summer on a free transfer after leaving Sporting Lisbon, signing a six-year deal with the club.

The report claims that Arsenal are preparing to make a loan offer for Martins, as Emery looks to bolster his attacking options.

Martins has struggled to make an impact in Madrid, though, and has started just one game so far this season, leading to reports of a loan move.

The 23-year-old was also left out of Atletico’s squad to face Huesca on Saturday in La Liga, adding to the speculation that a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano could be close.

Martins also missed training earlier in the week, though reports suggest that was due to a muscle problem.
