Edu in contention to become Arsenal’s new director of football

Arsenal are considering making former midfielder Edu the club’s new director of football, according to a report on the Evening Standard.

Edu played for the Gunners between 2001 and 2005 and could secure a return to the club soon.

The north London club are eager to add more expertise to their first team operations in a shake-up that has been in progress ever since the departure of legendary manager Arsene Wenger at the end of last season.

Shortly after Wenger left, chief executive Ivan Gazidis left Arsenal for AC Milan, meaning that Raul Sanllehi was made head of football with Vinai Venkatesham moving from chief commercial officer to managing director.

Edu is currently the technical director of the Brazil national team and also has experience as a director of football as he had that role with Brazilian club Corinthians.

Contact has been made between Arsenal and Edu but there is no indication whether Edu desires to accept the job yet.
