Hasenhuttl reveals Arsenal never contacted him over replacing Wenger

New Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has revealed that he was never contacted in regards to the Arsenal job, despite being linked for the role.

The Austrian was linked with a switch to Arsenal after leaving RB Leipzig last Summer. However, the Gunners chose instead to go with Unai Emery, who had just left PSG.

Hasenhuttl has now taken over at Southampton, who sacked Mark Hughes earlier this week.

Speaking in his first press conference since joining Saints, The Austrian said, via BBC Sport:

My name wasn’t big enough for the top six clubs.

My goal is to perform here with my team and take everyone with us to become a club with passion and with a good plan and play the kind of football we like. If we do that we can have a fantastic time together.

What I liked most last night [against Spurs] was the support our fans showed. It showed me the relationship is good, but they have to accept another style of football

It is a results business and we have to get them as soon as possible.

The Austrian boss will have a tough time keeping Saints in the division, after a very poor start to the season under Mark Hughes.
