# Unai Emery gives positive update regarding Laurent Koscielny

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has confirmed that club captain Laurent Koscielny has returned to training following a ruptured Achilles tendon injury he suffered towards the end of last season.

The Frenchman suffered the injury in the Gunners’ Europa League semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid, which resulted in the 33-year-old missing the World Cup.

Koscielny looked set to be included in Didier Deschamps’ squad, with the defender making over 200 appearances for Arsenal since joining from Lorient in 2010.

Talking to the [club website](https://www.arsenal.com/news/we-need-give-confidence-koscielny-now), Emery gave a positive update on Koscielny’s condition, confirming the experienced defender is back in and around the first-team training setup.

> He is very important for us because he is our captain. He is starting this week to do some training with us together and it is very, very good news for us.
>
> I think we need also to give confidence to him, to be close with us, because it was a big injury. But now he is getting better, he is training with us in some things and this is very positive.
>
> We need to be calm with him. Calm because we need after more than a month, \[him to\] feel first he is doing some things well, and then when he can play and do games in the training, we can think he is OK to play.

Koscielny’s return was originally scheduled for the end of November, however, with the Frenchman back out on the pitch already, Arsenal fans may well see the central defender feature for the first-team sooner than first expected.
