Danny Welbeck has hit back at comments made by Watford striker Troy Deeney regarding Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
A frustrated Deeney questioned why Welbeck, a fringe player at Arsenal, was being select ahead of the likes of himself and other English strikers scoring regular goals in the Premier League.
However, speaking after Arsenal’s 3-1 win in the Carabao Cup against Brentford, Welbeck responded to the claims, as reported by the Metro, with the striker clearly not paying too much attention to Deeney’s comments.
What I can do is just focus on me, not focus on anything else that is the most important thing. A few of the lads had a bit more of a pre-season than me which made it a bit difficult, I came back a bit later than the others.
I got 90 minutes last week, 90 minutes today and I’m just going to build on it from there and keep improving.
Welbeck was given a rare start in the League Cup against the Championship side and found the back of the net twice to help Arsenal progress into the next round.
Southgate has never hidden his intention to widen the pool of English players he has available to him, but it appears the likes of Deeney and Glenn Murray fall victim to the England boss trying to bring through younger players.
