# Unai Emery on track to fix Arsenal’s issues

There were clear indicators throughout Arsenal’s recent 2-0 win over Everton that after the bumpy start to his Premier League career, Unai Emery is making an imprint on the team.

The Gunners were outgunned by Marco Silva’s Everton in the first half, as the visitors spent the bulk of their possession on the front foot, attempting 5 shots in the first-half and a total of 10 once the game had finished. On top of this, Arsenal were plunged into making a defensive switch as the injured Soktratis made way for Rob Holding.

Everton’s wastefulness in front of goal must be acknowledged, but for the game to finish 0-0 after the first-half shows a resiliency from Arsenal that has been notably vacant from the North London side for the best part of a decade.

Making his first start in the Premier League since signing from Sampdoria in the Summer, 22 year-old Uruguay international Lucas Torriera was a contributing factor to this newfound resilience. Amassing 74 touches and 64 successful passes throughout the match, Torriera was certainly worth the wait and despite the physical disparity, traits are certainly shared with Invincible Patrick Viera.

Acquisitions made by Emery such as Matteo Guendouzi present an active approach to adding a youthful steel to Arsenal’s centre midfield that will stand them in good stead for years to come- especially in games where a win must be grind out as it was against Everton. Arsenal were far from their best until Alexandre Laccazette guided the ball into the top corner to make it 1-0 to The Arsenal. Luck was also on their side minutes later when Aubameyang’s clearly offside strike was left to stand; having the proverbial rub of the green is a feature of any good side.

Efficiency in possession, a bite in midfield and a hint of luck are all features attributed to sides the Spaniard has managed previously. Most prominently at Sevilla- where he achieved back-to-back-to-back Europa League triumphs but also at Valencia from 2008-12 and Paris Saint-Germain 2016-18, managed 7 major honours during his time in France, which is impressive regardless of the competitive imbalance of Ligue 1.

Arsenal supporters should be wary that embedding your own football ideologies at a club following the departure of it’s most successful and longest ever serving manager will take time and maybe a few transfer windows to do so. Domestic and European success is a recurrence in Emery’s trophy laden managerial career, as Arsenal start to wrack up W’s across different competitions, there’s a case to be made silverware may lie in the not to distant future.
