# Leno did not do enough says former Arsenal defender Martin Keown

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno did not do enough on Thursday night to show why he should be in the team, according to Martin Keown.

Speaking during the coverage on [BT Sport, as cited on the London Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/bernd-leno-did-nothing-to-threaten-petr-cech-s-place-in-the-arsenal-team-says-martin-keown-a3941886.html), Keown admits that while the German did not do anything wrong, he did not leave a lasting impression.

> I’m not sure anyone has done that tonight. Certainly not the goalkeeper. You can’t point blame at him for the goals, but if he pulled off a worldie save he might stay in the team. If he saved one of those goals you’d have to say he was quite brilliant. \[If he\] did nothing for the whole night but he pulled off two amazing saves, but he didn’t do that.

Leno has been unable to dislodge Petr Cech as Arsenal’s number one goalkeeper after joining from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer.

The German was making his first competitive start for the club during their 4-2 win over Ukrainian side Vorskla last night.

It can be argued that the goalkeeper was not at fault for either of the two goals conceded, but he had a relatively quiet evening aside from that.

Cech, who is heading into the final months of his contract with the club, is being tipped to return to the starting XI on Sunday against Everton.
