Emery insists Leno will be given a fair chance to impress

Arsenal manager Unai Emery has insisted that Bernd Leno will be given plenty of chances to impress throughout the season.

The Germany international has been sparingly used by Emery following his arrival at the club, with the experienced Petr Cech establishing himself as the new boss’ first-choice goalkeeper.

Leno, who joined Arsenal in the summer from Bayer Leverkusen, recently confessed that his shortage of chances had left him frustrated, with first-team football proving hard to come by at his new club.

However, after handing the goalkeeper his first start for Arsenal in the Gunners’ Europa League win against Vorskla Poltava on Thursday, Emery was again forced to insist that Leno will be given reasonable opportunity to impress.

As quoted by Goal, the Spaniard explained to the media on Friday that he will progressively use his 25-man squad as the season progresses.

With Leno, we are very happy. He played his first match in the first XI and we need to continue to give him chances, and also confidence for when he plays to have the best performance.

Cech is expected to return to the Arsenal starting line-up on Sunday afternoon as the Gunners look to beat Everton, securing their fourth consecutive Premier League win in the process.

But now the [priority] for us is a good performance and we spoke with every player, and with this situation with the goalkeepers, [we spoke] to explain the situation at the moment and continue working for each match to give us the performance.

Arsenal could move into the top four of the Premier League with a win against Everton.
