Keown says Leno may not be ready to replace Cech

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown is concerned that summer signing Bernd Leno may not be the man to replace goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Despite signing from Bayer Leverkusen for £22.5million this summer, the German has yet to make his Premier League debut, with Cech having started every game so far.

That is despite the Czech shot-stopper having looked largely unconvincing so far this campaign, conceding eight goals and looking uncomfortable with the ball at his feet.

And talking about the Gunners goalkeeping situation in a Q&A with MailOnline, Keown implied that Cech may still be first-choice because Leno hasn’t convinced the club that he is ready to take over. Keown said:

If you look at the statistics for goalkeepers in Europe, Leno excels in his distribution but is not the best when it comes to the shots he is expected to stop.

The German was not in their World Cup squad and hasn’t been called up for this international break. How good is he? We’re not too sure yet.
