Unai Emery hints at new position for Welbeck
Unai Emery has hinted that Danny Welbeck could potentially be deployed in an unfamiliar role this season, left back.
The Spaniard revealed that in training on Friday, Welbeck was played at left back and even claimed that his performance was ‘good’.
Speaking to The Mirror, Emery said this.
On Friday he worked with us at left-back. His performance was good.
After returning from his extended summer break after the World Cup, speculation was rife that the 27-year-old would be leaving the club, but Emery was impressed by Welbeck’s versatility.
However, being versatile won’t be enough for Welbeck as Emery has set him the challenge of producing his best performances in terms of goals and assists, and playing a key part in the high press the former PSG boss demands from his sides.
With competition for places in his usual positions in the form of Lacazette, Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan, Ozil and so on, it looks like the Englishman will be used in new roles this season.
