Southampton have come up short in their pursuit of Danny Welbeck.
The Arsenal striker’s wage demands were reported by Sky Sports to be beyond what the Saints were willing to pay, with a potential move therefore off the table.
Despite having made 43 appearances for the Gunners last season, the 27-year-old had been tipped with a move away from the Emirates this summer.
With a long list of alternative attacking options, it’s unlikely that Welbeck will see too much action as a starter this season, but he poses to continue his valuable role from the bench.
New manager Unai Emery may be forced to utilise Welbeck following the exit of Lucas Perez to West Ham earlier today.
Named to England’s 23-man World Cup squad, Welbeck appeared as substitute against Belgium.
Set to remain an Arsenal player for the start of the season, time will tell if Welbeck opts to take a departure in January instead.
