New Arsenal signing Bernd Leno has admitted that whilst growing up, his now team-mate Petr Cech was his idol, as per the Mirror.
The 26-year-old joined the Gunners from Leverkusen in a €22 million (£19.3 million) deal in June and is now poised to compete with the Czech for the No.1 spot.
Leno’s first Champions League match was against Chelsea while Cech was still at Stamford Bridge, and it was the latter who came out on top as Chelsea won 2-0 in 2011.
Now, seven years later, the pair are now team-mates and the German admits that thought of working with Cech is crazy after being quizzed on his chances of becoming the club’s number one.
It was seven years ago and now we are together at Arsenal, it’s crazy. I do my best, I work every day very hard and at the end the coach has to decide.
Leno has played 45 minutes in two of Arsenal’s pre-season friendlies as Unai Emery tries to decide who to start going forward.
Cech endured something of a mixed campaign last season, in which there were calls for him to be dropped and replaced as the club’s number one.
