# Arsenal man explains how Unai Emery is hoping to help the team’s defence

Sokratis Papastathopoulos has been explaining the measures that Unai Emery is taking in order to improve Arsenal’s defensive woes.

The Gunners endured a difficult campaign last term and their defence emerged as a glaring weakness, with a number of players committing individual errors throughout the season.

Following his appointment as the club’s new manager, Emery had evidently been tasked with amending the defensive frailties and has since overseen the signings of two new defenders.

Stephan Lichtsteiner joined the club on a free transfer from Juventus, whilst Sokratis signed from Borussia Dortmund in a deal believed to be worth £16 million.

Greece international Sokratis has been speaking about Emery’s influence on proceedings at Arsenal so far, outlining what the Spaniard is doing to ensure that a repeat of last season does not happen this time around.

As quoted by [Football London](https://www.football.london/arsenal-fc/news/latest-arsenal-news-sokratis-emery-14962991), the defender explained how Emery is going about solving Arsenal’s woes at the back:

> A lot of coaches and a lot of teams now look at only how to play, not how to defend. But with the new coach, we work also on the situations when we don’t have the ball and this is very important. On the first day, the coach worked on this.

> With him, all the players we work on tactics, we look a lot at videos, what was wrong, what we have to do better. I think and hope this year things at the back will be much better.

Sokratis will be hoping to hit the ground running this season as he gears up for his first tenure in English football.
