Midfielder turns down two Champions League sides to join Arsenal

Lucas Torreira’s agent has confirmed that the player turned down offers from Borussia Dortmund and Napoli in order to join Arsenal.

Speaking to Sampdoria News, Pablo Betancourt confirmed that the new Arsenal midfielder was a man in-demand this summer.

Whilst they remain unnamed, Betancourt revealed there was also some interest from clubs in La Liga.

Lucas was also requested by Borussia Dortmund, Naples and some Spanish teams, but there was a word agreement with Arsenal, everything was closed even at the club level. I am convinced that Arsenal is currently the ideal team to continue the path of growth.

Torreira impressed last season at Sampdoria, catching the eye of several teams in and around Europe.

The diminutive midfielder would also go on to impress during the World Cup in Russia, but Arsenal won the race to sign the player.

Both Dortmund and Napoli would have been able to offer the player Champions League football, something Arsenal are unable to do, but he has chosen the Premier League.

Torreira is set to be a key figure in Unai Emery’s side next season, with the Gunners boasting a new-look squad under the former Paris Saint-Germain boss.
