Sampdoria have confirmed that Lucas Torreira has joined Arsenal after he returned from Russia.

The Uruguayan midfielder has been widely expected to make the move to the Emirates this summer, but the deal has been delayed through his participation in the World Cup.

The player was believed to have undergone a medical in London yesterday before officially completing the move.

Torreira impressed last season for Sampdoria in Serie A and is being tipped to play a big role in Unai Emery’s midfield next season.

Arsenal are believed to have paid the Serie A side somewhere in the region of £26.4 million to secure the player’s services this summer.

The Gunners had tried to organise a medical to happen in Russia, but the player turned down that opportunity in a bid to focus on his countries’ participation at the World Cup, with Uruguay losing in the quarter-finals to France.
