# Gunners facing late pressure from Spain in deal to sign young defender

Atletico Madrid will provide late competition for Arsenal in the race to sign Freiburg defender Caglar Soyuncu.

According to AS, as cited on [Calcio Mercato](https://www.calciomercato.com/news/atletico-sfida-all-arsenal-per-un-difensore-66869), the young Turkish defender has emerged as a target for Diego Simeone’s men, despite previously [expressing his desire](https://readarsenal.com/2018/06/21/defender-reveals-he-has-turned-down-offers-as-he-wants-to-join-arsenal/) to join Arsenal.

A deal to sign the young defender has been dragging on for some time now, which could open up a window of opportunity for the Spanish side to swoop in.

The report claims that there is also thought to be other unnamed clubs in the hunt to sign Soyunco this summer.

Soyuncu is widely considered as one of the more promising defenders in Europe and the Gunners are keen to secure a deal.

At the age of just 22, it is yet to be seen if Arsenal view the player as someone who can fit into the first-team squad, or be seen as one for the future.
