Wenger confirms key Arsenal star could miss Atletico clash

Arsene Wenger has revealed the Henrikh Mkhitaryan is an injury doubt for Thursday’s Europa League clash with Atletico Madrid.

The Daily Star cite an interview with BBC Sport in which the Arsenal manager said he substituted the Armenian midfielder with 15 minutes remaining after he suffered a ‘bang to the knee’.

It was an encouraging performance from Mkhitaryan, who marked his return to Old Trafford with a goal shortly into the second half.

The 29-year-old joined Arsenal in January as part of the swap deal that saw Alexis Sanchez go the other way, and yesterday’s goal was only his third of the season.

When asked about Mkhitaryan’s health after the match, Wenger said:

We will see if Henrikh Mkhitaryan is available for Thursday. I took him off because he had a bang on his knee.

Arsenal travel to Madrid following last week’s 1-1 draw at the Emirates, after Alexandre Lacazette’s goal was cancelled out by his France team-mate Antoine Greizmann.

The Gunners were disappointed not to hold on for the win after having 28 shots at goal and playing against 10 men for 80 minutes of the match.

Wenger also revealed injury concerns over David Ospina and Alex Iwobi but refused to rule any of them out of Thursday’s match, saying they will be ‘monitored’.
