Arsenal must pay club-record fee to land Madrid star also wanted by Chelsea

Arsenal are weighing up the possibility of replacing veteran goalkeeper Petr Cech in the summer and have identified Atletico Madrid star Jan Oblak as their top target to become the former Chelsea star’s successor.

That’s according to the Express, who also name Chelsea as a contender for Oblak’s signature in the summer as they look for alternatives to Thibaut Courtois between the sticks amid claims he could leave.

Oblak is contracted to Atletico until June 2020 but his contract contains a £88m release clause which the La Liga club are fearful will be activated in the summer transfer window, which would be a club-record fee for both clubs.

Atletico signed the 25-year-old from Benfica for £14.4m in the summer of 2014 and he has kept 64 clean sheets in 108 La Liga appearances since his arrival – the most of any goalkeeper in the division during that time frame.

35-year-old Petr Cech signed a four-year deal with Arsenal when he signed from Chelsea in 2015 and there have been no talks to extend his deal beyond his current expiry date next June.
