Brighton manager Chris Hughton has praised the “outstanding” Arsene Wenger, and believes that the Frenchman will turn things around at Arsenal.
The Seagulls host Arsenal on Sunday, and will be buoyed by Arsenal’s poor form as of late, with the Gunners having lost seven games in 2018.
Arsenal’s players and Wenger have come under heavy fire from fans this week, having lost 3-0 to Manchester City in two consecutive games, in the space of five days, in both the Premier League and the Carabao Cup final.
However, Hughton believes Wenger still has the ability to turn things around. In his pre-match press conference, Hughton said;
He is an outstanding manager – has been and still is.
There is no one with more experience and I have absolute respect for what he has done and the ability he still has.
Sympathy is probably the wrong word. Arsene is a manager who has been around for so long and go through so many periods.
You can’t be a manager of that long without having difficult periods. The majority of time he has been there, there have been pluses.
There isn’t anyone with more experience to handle difficult times than Arsene and he will make sure he wants to get things right.
Brighton have gone six games unbeaten now, a run that has seen them ease their relegations worries as they have moved up to 12 place in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are now ten points outside of the Champions League spots in sixth place.
Despite the poor form of the Gunners, Hughton believes that it is the wrong time for his side to face the North London outfit. He said;
They will want a reaction, but we need to make sure we can look after our own business.
Most would say it’s arguably the worst time to play them because they’ll want a reaction but we’ve just got to make sure we get on with the job in hand and play to the levels we know we can play.
