Ian Wright has dismissed fan criticism of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ahead of this weekend’s North London derby, telling Arsenal supporters to ignore statistics.
Aubameyang struck up a good partnership with former Borussia Dortmund teammate Henrikh Mkhitaryan against Everton last weekend, where the 28-year old forward got off the mark with a goal while the Armenian international picked up three assists.
The Gunners splashed out a whopping £56million to bring the Dortmund striker to the Emirates last month, and Wright says that the Gabon international needs to play his natural game and he will be a success.
Talking to BBC 5 Live earlier this week, Wright said;
It’s been mentioned about Aubameyang not having enough touches in matches. He can get away with that.
If he stays right at the top there and [they] let him get on with it, then why do you want touches when you’ve got Özil, Mkhitaryan and all those players? You can stay on the edge and not touch it.
If Arsenal can play to his strengths, he’s that kind of player who could have four touches and score four goals.
Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has confirmed that his squad for the trip to Wembley will be largely similar to that that beat Everton, with Danny Welbeck and Petr Cech the two main doubts. Wenger said;
Basically, we should have a similar squad to what we had last week against Everton. Maybe Danny Welbeck will be back.
We had a few problems with Petr Cech, who we are not sure about at the moment because he’s not trained. I don’t know if he will be available. Nacho Monreal looks alright again.
It should be a similar squad.
