Arsenal and City to go head-to-head for Evans in January

Arsenal and Manchester City are reportedly going to be in a bidding war when the transfer window opens in January for West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans, according to the Telegraph.

Both clubs were linked to the Northern Irish defender in the summer, but Manchester City failed with a bid north of £30 million for Evans.

Arsenal also reportedly made a late move for him but were denied after offering £25 million to Tony Pulis, who rejected the offer.

It is believed that West Brom will try and sell Evans to give new manager Alan Pardew some more spending money to help boost the Baggies’ survival chances.

Both Manchester City and Arsenal will be looking to add defensive options, due to John Stones’ hamstring injury and Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker retiring at the end of this campaign.

When Pardew was asked about any potential business he would have to do in January to help keep West Brom out of the bottom three, he replied:

It’s good enough to stay up but when I look at the clubs who are involved, particularly around the relegation area, I know they’re going to do business. You can’t take our eye off that.

Evans, the former Manchester United defender and lifelong Red Devils fan, may find it hard moving to city rivals Manchester City, so may see Arsenal as his preferred destination.
