Wenger wants van Bronckhorst to replace him

Arsene Wenger has said that he would like former player Giovanni van Bronckhorst to replace him as Arsenal manager.

He has identified van Bronckhorst, who is currently manager of Feyenoord, as a potential candidate for the job.

Wenger bought the Dutchman from Rangers for a fee of £8.5million and he spent two years at Highbury before setting sail for Barcelona.

In his time at Arsenal, he won the Premier League in his first season of 2001-02 and won the FA Cup the following campaign.

However, a cruciate knee ligament injury saw him out for a few months during his short but sweet spell under Wenger.

Currently manager of Feyenoord, who in the week narrowly lost 1-0 at the Etihad in the Champions League, the Dutch champions are underperforming domestically, sitting 7th in the table.

However, during his time in Rotterdam, he has won the KNVB Cup and he guided Feyenoord to their first Dutch Eredivisie title in 18 years.

Speaking of his former boss, Wenger, van Bronckhorst said (via Daily Star):

His philosophy has been a example for millions. He is the best coach in the world.

However, another candidate looks to be Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe, of whom Wenger is a big fan.

Howe guided the Cherries from League Two to the Premier League and has survived two seasons in the top flight, finishing 9th last season.

Bournemouth currently lie 13th, and Howe’s work may lead him to get a big job such as Arsenal.

The board have said that Wenger will not pick his successor, however, they will make his choice a factor in the final decision.
