# Bundesliga side keen to land Mesut Ozil

Bundesliga side FC Schalke want to sign Mesut Ozil from Arsenal – but not in the summer transfer window.

Clemens Tonnies, Schalke’s supervisory board head, discussed the prospect of Ozil returning to Schalke, with a move away from Arsenal looking increasingly likely.

As quoted by [ESPN](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/soccer-transfers/story/3277395/schalke-would-welcome-mesut-ozil-return-but-wont-happen-next-summer), Tonnies said:

> I still have a great relationship with Mesut. We would definitely consider it \[a return\]. If it fits for both sides, it would be nice.

> The player could say that he returns to his roots, and that he plays football in this stadium and for those fans and the region once again. But it will certainly not happen next season.

Ozil came through the ranks at Schalke and made a name for himself in his homeland of Germany. However, while Tonnies is evidently keen for the player to return to his first ever senior side, it looks as though Ozil will not be back in action for Schalke next season.

The German international produced a superb display against Tottenham Hotspur for the Gunners recently but has struggled to develop consistency in the last couple of seasons.

Ozil’s contract expires in the summer and it’s seemingly unlikely that the 29-year-old will choose to extend his stay at the Emirates Stadium, with a January move also a possibility.
