# Debuchy back in Wenger’s plans

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Mathieu Debuchy is back in his plans, as reported by the [Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/mathieu-debuchy-a-candidate-for-arsenal-firstteam-again-after-winning-back-arsene-wengers-trust-a3672741.html).

The Frenchman has not enjoyed a successful spell with Arsenal following his move from Newcastle United some years ago. Debuchy’s progress has been halted by injuries, and he has failed to live up to expectations.

Arsenal looked to offload the right-back in the summer transfer window, but their efforts proved to be of no avail, with OGC Nice coming closest to securing his signature.

However, Wenger has confirmed that Debuchy is back in his plans following an impressive run of games in the team this season.

> We are all very pleased for him here because he has gone through some very difficult moments with setbacks. The fact that he got through 120 minutes (against Norwich) the other night is a huge boost for him. He needs to recover now but from now on, he’ll be a candidate to fight for the team places again.

The 32-year-old has been called upon in recent times as a result of Arsenal’s ongoing defensive crisis, with several key men ruled out through injuries.

> Mathieu is absolutely strong and determined as well. He’s a quiet character but a very strong one. I must say he’s 100 per cent a professional player. Everybody in the medical department just says he’s exceptional.

Debuchy has duly delivered when he’s played this term, though, and Wenger has evidently had a change of heart over his importance to the first-team squad.
