Keown: Mesut Ozil has mentally left Arsenal

Mesut Ozil’s future at Arsenal remains in limbo with the attacking midfielder yet to agree a new contract with the club and is set to leave at the end of the season on a free transfer.

Like his attacking counterpart Alexis Sanchez, Ozil has been reportedly looking for a massive pay rise in order to stay at the Emirates with the club’s performances on the pitch not up to his standard.

The likes of Manchester United and Inter Milan have been linked with a January move for the German World Cup winner, but Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes the midfielder has mentally downed his tools and left Arsenal.

I think he’s testing [Arsene] Wenger more than any other player has. I think it was Belarus the other week, he didn’t fancy going. He didn’t want to go.

Suddenly he was injured again, he played nine minutes against West Bromwich Albion on the Monday, so how did he get injured there?

I think in some departments he’s already left. Psychologically, mentally, he’s already left the football club. Maybe Wenger is now trying to do the best deal he can to get some compensation for him.

Regarded as one of Arsenal’s few top class players, Ozil has provided more Premier League assists than any other player since arriving at the club and his impressive performances normally go hand in hand with Arsenal’s.

The 28-year-old appears unwilling to commit to the club making it only a matter of time before he jumps ship.
