Walcott explains why he let Giroud take the penalty against Bate Borisov

Arsenal and England forward Theo Walcott admitted after his side’s 4-2 win over BATE Borisov on Thursday night that he passed on the opportunity to score a hat-trick from the penalty spot to allow Olivier Giroud to reach 100 goals for the Gunners, the Independent report.

Walcott bagged his 100th goal for Arsenal last season at Sutton United in the FA Cup and speaking to the media after the game Walcott admitted he was happy to hand over the ball to Giroud as he slotted the ball home from 12 yards.

There was a chance for me to take the penalty but knowing that Olivier was on 99 goals I felt like he should. It’s a great moment in his career to get 100 goals for Arsenal, I’ve achieved it myself and I know the feeling. It’s brilliant so that was why he took the penalty. There were chances but I can’t be too selfish.

On the night it was a routine victory for the Gunners, with midfielder Jack Wilshere at the heart of an impressive performance.

Walcott scored the opening two goals before Rob Holding scored the third goal inside the opening 25 minutes. Giroud scored’s Arsenal’s fourth during the opening stages of the second half, rounding off a successful night for the Gunners.
