Wenger keen for January window to be scrapped

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has called for the January transfer window to be scrapped.

As quoted by the Independent, the Frenchman discussed the changes he’d like to see made to the respective January and summer transfer windows, and voiced his disapproval of the mid-season buying and selling period.

The players who do not play or the players who are tapped up in October they already start again to think: ‘Where do I go in January?’. That’s not a way to be on board with a football club.

Wenger and his Arsenal side underwent a difficult summer in recent times. They found recruitment somewhat challenging throughout the course of the window and were significantly pegged back by key players appearing to demand moves away from the club.

We are here to entertain people and you can do that with people who are really on board together, to achieve something together and not every minute that it doesn’t go well to think: ‘Where can I go next?’

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain departed in a big-money move to Liverpool having refused a new contract at the Emirates, while Alexis Sanchez would have parted company with the club on the final day of the window if their deal for AS Monaco winger Thomas Lemar hadn’t have collapsed.

I believe that we have to bring some decency. We all complain today that it has become too much a business, but we can do something about it. We have that responsibility in the game.

Wenger evidently has fears about the season ahead given his caution regarding his players’ work rate ahead of the January window.

You can’t have a player preparing for a vital football game and still be on the phone at 4 o’clock: ‘Do I go or not?’ or ‘How much is it?’, ‘Where do I go?’

The ideal situation would be to have a transfer period that is closed 48 hours before the first game of the championship and to close it completely until the season after.
