Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has conceded that French prodigy Kylian Mbappe was too expensive for his side, as reported by Standard Sport.
Wenger, who has once again come under scrutiny recently regarding his team’s performances, admitted that any deal to sign Mbappe was too much for the Gunners.
The 18-year-old has now joined fellow Ligue 1 giants Paris St-Germain initially on loan, but will join permanently next summer for £165m.
€180m (£165m) is a little high for us. For 90 per cent of players, their career depends on their choice of club. Kylian is part of the 10 per cent where any choice he makes will be a good one.
He [Mbappe] can be like Pele, there are no limits to his game.
It wasn’t an ideal transfer window for Arsenal, despite adding Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette to their ranks. Wenger missed out on several top targets, like Mbappe and his Monaco compatriot Thomas Lemar, whilst also losing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool for £40 million.
It was understood that a £92 million bid was submitted for Lemar on deadline day, however the Gunners ran out of time to complete the deal, which also scuppered Alexis Sanchez’s switch to Manchester City.
The North London side sit 16th in the Premier League, after one win in three games leaves them on three points. A home game against AFC Bournemouth faces Wenger now, who will need the points to slightly ease the pressure on his shoulders.
