Arsenal are reportedly stepping up their efforts to land a central defender this summer.
It’s claimed by Fox Sport UK producer James Dodd that the Gunners have held discussions with Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk’s representatives over a potential summer transfer.
Twitter: #AFC have met with Van Dijk & his reps but I’m fairly sure all the big PL clubs have. I guess Saints would rather sell to us than Liverpool (@JamesDoddUK)
The Saints have been adamant in their stance that Van Dijk is not for sale this summer, but with the central defender having handed in a transfer request and refused to play, a move could yet be a possibility.

Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City have all held an interest in the Netherlands international, but it’s thought that only an astronomical offer would convince Saints to sell.
Van Dijk has been out of action since January, but is now fully recovered from an ankle injury and is keen to play at the highest level.
