Arsenal manager Arsene wenger has said that the club were “never close” to securing the signing of Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez as the Algerian nears a move to Serie A side AS Roma, according to a report on Turkish Football.

The Leicester City winger has made it clear that he wants to leave the King Power Stadium this summer and wants to join a big team where he can challenge for more silverware.

Arsenal were thought to be leading the pursuit but Wenger confirmed that this was not the case.

I rate him as a player but we have similar types with Alex Iwobi, Jack Wilshere back, Mesut Ozil. We have plenty of the same type of players.

The Foxes are demanding £50m for Mahrez and Roma are yet to match that figure and if no club does, then Mahrez will remain at Leicester for this season.

Roma have already made two bids for Mahrez which have both been immediately turned down by Leicester who are adamant that they will get the figure that they value him at and are refusing to negotiate a lower price.
