Marseille pull out of race to sign Olivier Giroud

French Ligue 1 club Marseille will not pursue a move for Arsenal forward Olivier Giroud after the striker was heavily linked with a move back to his homeland this summer, according to a report on the Mirror.

The striker has been rumoured with a potential exit from the club following the big money arrival of fellow Frenchman Alexandre Lacazette which appear to have made Giroud’s chances of starting up front even slimmer.

Everton are still monitoring Giroud’s situation and are considering a move for the striker.

But Marseille boss Rudi Garcia told French sports outlet L’Equipe:

I do not think he wants to come to Marseille, Olivier Giroud. That’s the problem. It is understandable – as he is a striker with the French national team who is making progress with Arsenal – that when he does change clubs, his interests might lie beyond OM.

The 30-year-old has been frustrated with a lack of starting opportunities given to him by manager Arsene Wenger and wants to play as much as possible so he can cement his place in the France national team ahead of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Giroud started Arsenal’s Community Shield victory on the bench but was used as a substitute towards the end of the game and he eventually scored the winning penalty.
