Arsenal have been given fresh hope of signing French winger Thomas Lemar after L’Equipe revealed that Monaco were close to signing free agent Rachid Ghezzal, who is also a winger as a possible replacement for Lemar who wants to move to North London, according to a report on Sport Witness.
The Gunners have been pursuing Lemar since the end of last season and have had three bids rejected by the French Ligue 1 champions, who were adamant that they will not sell Lemar this summer.
After several big name departures for huge sums of money, Monaco closed the door on Arsenal’s move for Lemar as they didn’t want to lose more players and risk not challenging for the liege 1 title next season.
However, with Monaco almost confirming the signature of ex-Lyon man Ghezzal, it could open the door for Lemar to make his desired move to the Premier League like ex team mates TiemouE Bakayoko, Bernardo Silva and Benjamin Mendy.
Arsene Wenger is keen to add firepower to his attack and with Alexis Sanchez looking increasingly likely to stay at the Emirates, Lemar would be the finishing touch on a lethal attacking setup for Arsenal.
Should Monaco confirm the signature of Ghezzal, then they may ease their stance on keeping Lemar.
